WASHINGTON — The District Snow Team is on standby as a winter mix of freezing rain and snow is expected Tuesday morning.
The mix with slushy snow and some freezing rain will impact areas west of I-95 during the morning hours between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. By around 6 a.m., it will be pouring rain for most of the region, except for areas well north and west, where snow will continue to accumulate, and ice will remain a concern in the higher elevations. Showers will last through the early afternoon.
During the wintery mix, the District Snow Team will be on standby beginning at 11 p.m. Monday to address any potentially icy conditions.
On Monday, Mayor Muriel Bowser activated a Cold Alert for the District of Columbia starting at 9 a.m. and ending 24 hours later. This means D.C. will open Hypothermia Shelters to ensure that there are warm and safe places for those who are unhoused.
An interactive map of available shelters for men, women, and those in the LGBTQ+ community can be found here. From November through March, free transportation to and from a shelter or day center is available to individuals experiencing homelessness 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. To request free, accessible transportation, call the Shelter Hotline at 202-399-7093 or dial 311. If you believe there is an immediate medical emergency, call 911.
The Mayor’s office is reminding residents to stay indoors or in warm, heated places, but to not forget about neighbors, especially seniors, children, and those with disabilities or other access and functional needs.
For animal emergencies, or to report pets being left outside in extreme temperatures, call the Brandywine Valley SPCA at 202-888-7387.
