Mayor Bowser has issued an Extreme Cold Alert in D.C. from Thursday evening to Friday morning. Residents should prepare for snow and freezing temperatures.

WASHINGTON — Mayor Bowser has activated an Extreme Cold Alert on Thursday, beginning at 8 p.m. The alert will stay in effect through Friday at 9 a.m.

The District Snow team will start pre-treating the roads at 7 p.m. Thursday. All major roadways and elevated structures will be salted starting at midnight.

This is all in preparation for a wintry mix that is expected to pass through our area starting on Friday. The National Weather Service is forecasting snow to start between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Friday morning with steady activity between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m. Snow is expected to taper off between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., with a possible accumulation of an inch or more.

Due to the mix of precipitation and low temperatures, pedestrians, motorists, and bicyclists should limit outdoor exposure and proceed with caution when traveling on roads and walkways.

An Extreme Cold Alert is activated when the actual or forecasted temperature falls below:

  • 15°F without precipitation, OR
  • 20°F if precipitation (snow, rain, or hail) is expected
    • Alert messaging will include forecasted precipitation

Cold Weather Safety Precautions:

  • Stay inside if you can.
  • Cover up and limit exposed skin when you go outside.
  • Check on your neighbors and learn the signs of hypothermia, especially in young children, the elderly, and those with access and functional needs, who are the most vulnerable in our community.
  • For all animal emergencies, including animals left outside in extreme temperatures, call the Brandywine Valley SPCA at 202-888-PETS.
