But BMX racers apparently enjoy the challenge.

California remains one of the most important places in American BMX racing, and the 2026 calendar has already delivered major national events, big-name riders, sponsors, packed tracks and enough jumps to make ordinary bicycle commuting look extremely boring.

BMX—short for bicycle motocross—has deep roots in Southern California. The region helped turn bicycle racing on dirt into an organized sport, eventually leading to the development of national competition and, later, Olympic BMX racing.

Today, California riders can compete in everything from local races to USA BMX national events.

And the equipment has changed dramatically.

The kid who once showed up with a bicycle and a helmet can now arrive with a lightweight race machine, professional-grade components, specialized racing gear and a pit setup that sometimes looks like a Formula 1 garage.

Industry Hills Gets the Big Show

One of California’s major BMX events in 2026 was the USA BMX SoCal Nationals, held February 27 through March 1 at the Industry Hills Expo Center in City of Industry.

The event was Stop No. 5 of the USA BMX National Series and attracted top riders from across the United States and internationally. USA BMX promoted the weekend with a Back to the Future theme, which is fitting because BMX itself has a fascinating history stretching back decades. (USA BMX)

The racing took place at the Industry Hills Expo Center, where organizers created a custom track inside the venue.

That meant no need to worry about California deciding to have California weather.

The event was indoors.

Rain?

No problem.

Heat?

Much less of a problem.

A BMX racer can concentrate on the important things—such as figuring out why somebody just passed them while airborne.

So parents can watch their children race and then immediately begin negotiating about who gets to choose the next attraction.

Bakersfield Turns Up the Speed

California received another major national BMX weekend in May when the Golden State Nationals arrived at Metro BMX in Bakersfield.

Metro BMX is located at the Sam Lynn Ballpark complex.

The racing surface was prepared under the direction of Jordan Miranda, a two-time world champion, according to USA BMX.

That should make the dirt sufficiently serious.

There are probably few things more intimidating for an amateur BMX rider than hearing:

“Don’t worry, the track was prepared by a two-time world champion.”

At that point, you are either ready to race or reconsidering your weekend plans.

Riders From Across California

The SoCal Nationals demonstrated just how broad the California BMX pipeline has become.

USA BMX’s published results included riders from Ventura, Sylmar, Hollister, Bakersfield, Long Beach, Rosemead, San Pedro, Rosamond and other California communities. (USA BMX)

Among the younger competitors listed were riders such as Harper Jurewicz, Kobie Bussberg, Nikko Pita, Claire Rogerson, Issac Santana, Cheyenne Komatsu and Caleb Lewellen. (USA BMX)

That is one of the interesting things about BMX racing.

You don’t have to be a professional adult athlete to participate.

The sport has divisions for very young riders and continues through older age categories.

That makes BMX one of the rare competitive sports where a family can theoretically have multiple generations involved.

Grandpa can race.

Dad can race.

Mom can race.

The six-year-old can race.

And everyone can compare times at dinner.

Sponsors Are Part of the Show

Modern BMX racing is also heavily connected to the bicycle industry’s manufacturers, component companies and specialty brands.

Those sponsorship relationships are important because competitive BMX bicycles are highly specialized machines.

For serious competitors, the bicycle is not simply transportation.

It is equipment.

Very expensive equipment that is about to be launched over a dirt jump.

California’s Local Racing Scene

The national events get the headlines, but California’s local BMX scene is just as important.

The Golden State BMX Racing program operates a 4-Star Series for USA BMX licensed riders, with races across California. Its published program includes venues such as Manzanita Park BMX in Prunedale, Frogtown in Angels Camp, Airtime BMX in Reedley and Elkhorn BMX in Rio Linda. (Cal BMX)

That network gives riders opportunities to compete closer to home before taking on national competition.

It also creates a pathway.

Local race.

Regional race.

National event.

More national events.

Eventually, perhaps, the rider is competing at an elite level.

That progression is one reason BMX remains such a strong development sport.

San Diego Joins the Party

Southern California’s BMX footprint isn’t limited to Los Angeles.

The 2026 California State Games scheduled BMX racing at San Diego BMX, located at 3170 Armstrong Street in San Diego.

That creates an interesting combination of organized youth sports, amateur competition and statewide travel.

For families, a BMX weekend can become something considerably larger than a race.

It can become a road trip.

BMX Is a Vacation Sport—Sort Of

California is unusually well suited for this.

A family could attend a BMX race in Southern California and combine it with beaches, amusement parks, restaurants, museums or other attractions.

For travelers searching for a fun vacation in California, a BMX weekend can provide something different from the usual theme-park itinerary.

The child gets to race.

The parents get to explore.

Everyone gets to argue about sunscreen.

And somebody inevitably leaves a bicycle tire leaning against the hotel room wall.

The Funny Thing About BMX

The sport looks slightly ridiculous until you understand what is happening.

From a distance, BMX racing can look like a bunch of people wearing enormous helmets riding tiny bicycles.

Then the gate drops.

Suddenly everybody is sprinting.

The first jump arrives.

Bikes are airborne.

Someone takes a turn at an angle that appears to violate several laws of physics.

The crowd screams.

And approximately 45 seconds later, the race is over.

That’s one of BMX’s greatest attractions.

There is almost no downtime.

A traditional race can last only minutes, but those minutes can contain an extraordinary amount of action.

A bad start can ruin the race.

A good jump can change the order.

One mistake can cost several positions.

And the finish can come down to fractions of a second.

California’s BMX Future Looks Fast

The 2026 schedule demonstrates that California remains firmly connected to the national BMX racing scene.

The SoCal Nationals brought national-level competition to City of Industry.

The Golden State Nationals brought the series to Bakersfield.

San Diego hosted California State Games competition.

Meanwhile, regional programs continue developing riders throughout the state. (Cal State Games)

The sport’s appeal isn’t difficult to understand.

It’s fast.

It’s relatively accessible.

It works for young and older competitors.

It has an established competition structure.

And California offers the weather, population and historical connection to BMX that make it an ideal home for racing.

Most importantly, BMX still has something that many sports have lost:

It looks like fun.

There are no complicated explanations required when the starting gate drops.

The objective is simple.

Get down the track faster than everyone else.

Stay upright.

Try not to become the entertainment.

And if you do crash, hopefully somebody got the video.
