WASHINGTON — Three Things to Know:

  • Period of light snow Monday afternoon/evening
  • Wintry mix Monday night/Tuesday morning
  • Much warmer later in the week

Forecast:

Sunday night: Partly cloudy and cold. Lows: 27 – 33. Winds: NE – 5.
Monday: Thickening clouds with light snow developing. Cold. Highs: 34 – 38. Winds: NE/SE 5 – 10.
Monday night: A light wintry mix. Lows: 29 – 33. Winds: SE – 5.

Temperatures on Sunday turned cooler and are expected to drop even more as we head into Monday. There is also an increasing chance for a period of light snow across the metro Monday afternoon and evening. Then, a wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain will be possible Monday night and early Tuesday morning.

A relatively weak disturbance will move into the area on Monday, bringing with it a little light snow. Initially, this system looked to fall apart or not quite reach our area until Monday night, but the latest trends show it arriving earlier. With temperatures in the 30s on Monday, light snow will be the form of precipitation that falls. Snow will likely start between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., but it will be mainly light with just minor accumulations, and mainly on grassy surfaces. We can’t rule out a dusting to 1 inch of snow by the Monday evening commute. Precipitation will linger into Monday night and early Tuesday morning with temperatures hovering near freezing. At this point, precipitation will likely be light freezing rain or a mix of sleet and snow. A light glaze of ice is possible by the Tuesday morning commute, with the best chance for slick spots being northwest of town. Temperatures will eventually climb above freezing on Tuesday with any leftover precipitation becoming plain rain.

Lingering showers cannot be ruled out on Wednesday but temperatures will be milder in the 60s. A much bigger warming trend arrives for later in the week and next weekend.
