Numbers prove Real Madrid superstar thrives in makeshift role whether he likes it or not

In recent weeks, much has been said about Federico Valverde’s situation at Real Madrid.

The rumours intensified after he was not only left out of the starting XI against Kairat Almaty but also failed to feature in the UEFA Champions League tie.

Questions were raised about his role under Xabi Alonso, but Valverde quickly addressed the matter, reaffirming his full commitment to the club.

However, when Alonso announced the starting XI for the Villarreal clash, many were surprised to see the Uruguayan’s name – not in midfield, but at right-back.

It is no secret that Valverde prefers to operate in midfield rather than defence, yet his sense of duty to the team remains absolute.

He has never refused to play where he is needed, even if it means stepping into a position far from his natural role.

A blessing to have

Despite his discomfort with the role, Valverde’s performance against Villarreal showed why he is such a vital figure in Alonso’s plans.

He was the third most active Real Madrid player on the pitch, recording 91 touches throughout the match.

He delivered the most crosses into the box (4, matching Vinicius Jr.) and was relentless in recovering possession, winning the ball back six times, which was the same as Aurelien Tchouameni and Vinicius.

Defensively, his numbers were just as impressive. He made four tackles – more than anyone else on the pitch – winning three of them cleanly.

Out of the four passes Madrid intercepted, two came from Tchouameni and the other two from Valverde.

The tactical dilemma for Xabi Alonso

Valverde’s contribution was not limited to defence. He also pushed forward effectively, attempting two long-range efforts and setting up a golden chance for Jude Bellingham, whose shot narrowly missed.

The only challenge now lies with Xabi Alonso – deciding where Valverde fits best.

His ability to excel in multiple roles gives Madrid tactical flexibility, but it also makes it difficult to lock him into one position.

Valverde may not enjoy defending, but his professionalism ensures that whenever he is on the pitch, Real Madrid benefit, no matter where he plays.
