Drivers could encounter some additional traffic in Silver Spring for the foreseeable future during construction of a bicycle and pedestrian route along Maryland Route 390/16th Street.
Starting Monday, the $10 million project will cause single-lane closures on northbound 16th Street for around nine months, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration. The pedestrian route will run between Spring Street and 2nd Avenue in Montgomery County.
Drivers can expect to see partial closures Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., along with off-peak evening single-lane closures, during the duration of the project.
The State Highway Administration has recommended that drivers plan for extra time during construction. The bicycle and pedestrian route project should be completed by late 2027 or early 2028.

The project on 16th street will feature an 8-foot-wide, two-way protected bike path; a median to split vehicle traffic from bicyclists and a 6-foot-wide sidewalk, according to the administration. The intersection at 16th Street and Spring Street will be reconstructed to protect bicyclists and new traffic signals, lighting and signs will be installed.
