The state of Maryland is looking to help the hundreds of students who were unenrolled at Howard University.

Gov. Wes Moore said students can receive expedited admissions help and an $800 credit if they attend a University System of Maryland institution this fall.

Hundreds of first-year students were unenrolled from Howard University after missing a payment deadline. On Wednesday, Howard University confirmed that 200 of the more than 500 incoming students that were unenrolled have been readmitted.

Moore said the program is about helping students stay on track toward earning their degrees.

There’s growing frustration for hundreds of incoming Howard University students who were unenrolled after missing a tuition payment deadline. News4’s Aimee Cho reports.

“Student who enroll at a participating University System of Maryland institution, they’re also going to receive an $800 credit so families are not forced to pay twice for enrollment and also housing deposits,” Moore told News4. “This is what we mean when we say that we’re going to invest in our future and we’re going to make sure that we leave no one behind in the process.”

Moore said he directed the Maryland Higher Education Commission and University System of Maryland to work together to help the students find available programs, navigate financial aid options and seek expedited late admissions at institutions with space available.

Some of the schools in the University System of Maryland include:

  • Bowie State University
  • University of Maryland
  • Towson University
  • Salisbury University
